Throughout the night, a ‘Diya’ is placed in each room as well as everywhere around the house. Naraka Chaturdashi is a Hindu festival of profound significance. It is celebrated a day before Lakshmi Puja or Diwali and follows Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi. This day is commemorated with early morning oil baths with ubtan, ‘pooja’ (worship), and festivities. Devotees worship the goddess of riches, Lakshmi. According to tradition, on this day, Goddess Lakshmi visits her worshippers and bestows gifts on them. Govardhan Puja is held on the fourth day of this five-day Hindu festival. According to tradition, Lord Indra was angry and attempted to sink the village of Gokul. Lord Krishna protected the inhabitants of Gokul from Lord Indra’s anger by moving the Govardhan Mountain to bring relief. A blessing was bestowed on the Govardhan Mountain that it will be honored through the ages. Since then, the custom has been carried on.

To commemorate the occasion, worshippers present Lord Krishna with a ‘mountain’ of food, and so food plays a vital role in this puja. Aside from that, devotees chant hymns, and kirtans, adorn their homes and adore Lord Krishna.
